The Refugee Crisis is a Global Humanitarian Crisis

Across the globe, wars, natural disasters and extreme poverty are driving families to leave their homes. People are leaving behind their belongings and their hopes for the future to seek safety, protection and a better life in other countries. Some cross borders to become refugees, others find refuge within their own borders, but all are uprooted and displaced.

Despite international agreements like the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and UN agencies like UNHCR, many displaced people are being denied the help they need to rebuild their lives. Their lives remain impacted by multiple traumatic experiences, including physical violence, exploitation, grief and loss of loved ones, and chronic stress. Displaced persons are often unable to access quality education or employment opportunities, and struggle to rebuild their livelihoods without the support of family members, friends and the trappings of their old lives.

Ultimately, this is a global humanitarian crisis, and it will only be resolved by ending the conflicts and persecution that cause people to flee in the first place. In the meantime, all governments must invest in safe and healthy communities, investigate and prosecute trafficking gangs that exploit refugees and migrants, put human rights before profits, and stand up against xenophobia and racial discrimination that fuel the problem. Investing in refugees means investing in the hope and potential of the world’s next generation. Let us remember and celebrate their courage, determination and strength by ensuring they have the opportunity to live a decent life, free from fear and in peace.
