International Relations at Royal Holloway

International relations (IR) is an interdisciplinary field that examines the forces that shape today’s global society. Its broad range of topics include world trade and economic policy; international security and peacebuilding; global environment, health, and natural resources; and peoples and nations.

This multidisciplinary approach to international studies allows students to develop a deep understanding of the complex issues that influence our global society. Students also learn how to analyse international policy and gain practical skills in diplomacy, negotiation, and conflict resolution. This is a valuable skill for careers in the private sector, government, nonprofit organizations, and international institutions.

The study of IR also provides unique opportunities for personal growth. By studying the cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives of many different people, you’ll expand your horizons and become a more well-rounded citizen. This is a major benefit of any university degree and contributes to a student’s overall intellectual development.

Depending on your interests, you can choose from a wide variety of graduate courses. These can be research-based or taught, and some will have a focus on specific geographical regions, such as Europe. You can also specialise in a particular subject, such as global governance, security, or business.

Having a strong language skill is also often required for a career in IR. You can build this up as part of your undergraduate course through combined study or by taking a pre-Masters programme such as the one at Royal Holloway. These two-semester programmes will build your academic and English language skills, allowing you to progress to your masters at university.
