Writing About Current Events

current events

Throughout the ages, people have used writing to recap current events and share noteworthy information with their peers. Today, the internet has made it easier than ever to disseminate news and create interest in current events. There are many types of news focused content you can write and each serves a different purpose.

Straight reporting is the most common type of news article and usually covers a significant event or development. When writing a straight reporting story, it is important to avoid giving your personal opinion and instead stick with the facts. This will allow the reader to come to their own conclusions about the topic.

Other news articles include interviews, which give the opportunity for an interviewee to speak directly to the reader and share their perspective on a given issue. When including quotes in an article, it is important to properly cite the source so that readers know where the information came from. For example, if a source is named the first time they are mentioned in the article, their full name should be used; however, subsequent references to that same person can use only their last name.

Spotlight articles are a good place to feature faculty, staff, advisors or students/alumni so that prospective and current Wayne State students can “see themselves” at the University. Like news articles, spotlights should be written in a timely manner but should also be able to stand on their own over time.
