The Front-Page of a Website

The front-page of a newspaper contains the biggest news stories that day and often has a big red masthead and eye catching pictures. It can also give us a clue about the paper’s attitudes towards the news, for example tabloid papers tend to focus on celebrity gossip while more serious newspapers tend to focus on national and international politics. A website can have a front page too, which is the first page a visitor will see when they enter the site. It may also be called a welcome mat or landing page and it can contain a site map and links to key pages within the site and a search box.

A popular online marketplace for classified ads known as Backpage has been accused of facilitating sex trafficking and other crimes. In 2014, three anonymous Jane Does who were sex trafficked as minors sued Backpage in federal court claiming that their traffickers used the website to post ads offering them for sex. The district court ruled against the plaintiffs but they appealed. The First Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Backpage did not substantially edit the content of the sex trafficking ads and therefore had Section 230 protection from the lawsuits.

Microsoft FrontPage was a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editor and Web site creation tool that was included with the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems until 2006. It has been replaced by two other products, SharePoint Designer and Expression Web.
